COPD: CardiOPulmonary Disease?

چکیده

C hronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is defined by the presence of airflow limitation which is not fully reversible, but COPD encompasses numerous phenotypes [1]. Phenotypes are the products of genetic and environmental interactions, with ‘‘environment’’ being broadly defined. The systematic measurement and analysis of clinical and other qualitative and quantitative traits may refine COPD phenotypes, features of which may be shared between different disease states [2, 3]. HAN et al. [4] have defined clinical phenotypes in COPD as ‘‘a single or combination of disease attributes that describe differences between individuals with COPD as they relate to clinically meaningful outcomes (symptoms, exacerbations, response to therapy, rate of disease progression, or death).’’ Identification of such phenotypes would not only facilitate outcome prediction and ‘‘personalised’’ treatment, but also improve the understanding of critical biological and mechanistic disease pathways. The systemic impact of COPD has led to consideration of extrapulmonary disease manifestations in recent efforts to construct these phenotypes.

Cardiopulmonary Mortalities and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Attributed to Ozone Air Pollution

Background & Aims of the Study: Ozone is a summer pollutant which can cause respiratory complications, eye burning sensation and failure of immune defense against infectious diseases. Ahvaz city (southwestern Iran) is one of the seven polluted Iranian metropolises. In this study we examined the health impacts of ozone pollution in Ahvaz city during years 2010 and 2011. Ma...

Cardiopulmonary exercise test and PaO2 in evaluation of pulmonary hypertension in COPD

Background Exercise tolerance decreases as COPD progresses. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is common in COPD and may reduce performance further. COPD patients with and without PH could potentially be identified by cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). However, results from previous studies are diverging, and a unified conclusion is missing. We hypothesized that CPET combined with arterial blood ga...

Endothelin-1 polymorphisms involved in impaired exercise tolerance in COPD patients. A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide that may lead to impaired exercise tolerance. In this study we exhibit the relationship between two endothelin-1 (+134 3A/4A and G198T) SNPs involved in COPD and their association to impaired exercise tolerance. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study population consisted of 22 COPD smoke...

Cardiopulmonary response during whole-body vibration training in patients with severe COPD

Several studies in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have shown that whole-body vibration training (WBVT) has beneficial effects on exercise capacity. However, the acute cardiopulmonary demand during WBVT remains unknown and was therefore investigated in this study. Ten patients with severe COPD (forced expiratory volume in 1 s: 38±8% predicted) were examined on two con...

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing in evaluation of patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND Objective assessment of severity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is mainly limited to pulmonary function testing performed at rest. But, accurate assessment of exercise capacity in patients with COPD may be possible with cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). METHODS Forty-three patients with stable COPD were included and were divided into three grou...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in patients with lung cancer: prevalence, impact and management challenges

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer share a common etiological factor (cigarette smoking) and usually coexist in everyday clinical practice. The prevalence of COPD among newly diagnosed patients with lung cancer sometimes exceeds 50%. COPD is an independent risk factor (2-4 times higher than non-COPD subjects) for lung cancer development. The presence of emphysema in ad...
